Chronicle-2021

91 90 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition Orchestra The year started off with much excitement as there were five Grade 8s who joined the Orchestra. The boys started learning new music with uncertainty as to what regulations would allow. We were very fortunate to be featured in three outdoor Open Weekend performances. The boys performed phenomenally and were very well received by the prospective parents and Grade 7 visitors. This would be the last big performance but as the year progressed the boys were always eager to form small groups and perform every chance they could get. This included a smaller Marimba Band than most years, which got together whenever possible to create music, despite limited performance opportunities. Each year lends itself to certain musical aspects, depending on the current selection of instruments taken by the boys of the College. There is a relatively small string section which was boosted by the addition of a cello and two violins, but we have grown our wind and brass sections with the addition of another Trumpet. There were approximately 18 boys who were regulars in the Orchestra this year, all of whom showed incredible passion and commitment to showcase the instrumental aspects of the school’s musical offerings. A highlight for the boys was getting the opportunity to record their parts in the recording studio and film a video for No Time to Die, the theme song from the new James Bond film. This featured the vocal talents of Bandile Makhaye and was a favourite amongst the boys and the audiences at the Open Weekend. I would like to thank the boys for their commitment this year and especially the two Grade 12 boys that are leaving. Finally, as always, I would like to make mention of management and the school as a whole, for ensuring that there is a space for such a vital part of these boys’ lives.
