Chronicle-2021

93 92 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition Public Speaking Societies 2021 certainly was a year of attempts to get back to normal and it is so encouraging that both the Speakers’ and Inner Circles were able to host some events this year. We held a combined dinner with both societies in Term 2, which was a wonderful opportunity for the newer members of the Speakers’ Circle to be shown the ropes by the seniors and to witness excellence in public speaking. The much-anticipated Inter-house Public Speaking competition was the third term’s focus, with Pembroke House emerging victorious. The competition was of an exceptionally high standard and each participant contributed to the success of their House. In Term 4, The Inner Circle members hosted their parents at a formal dinner and prize-giving that offered a fond farewell to the Grade 12 members. Speeches revolved around the theme of enjoying what has happened, rather than feeling sad that it is over. The Matrics were taken on a walk down memory lane and acknowledged for the legacy they have established. Trophies for the best speeches in the following categories were awarded to: Trophy for the best Object Speech: Lwandle Ngema and Kudzai Kamwendo Trophy for the best Icebreaker Speech: Ethan Glenny and John Eastes Trophy for the best Impromptu Speech: Toka Kgomo Trophy for the best Introduction of a Speaker: Javhar Naidoo and Josh Owen Trophy for the best Prepared Speech: Javashkaar Naidoo Trophy for the best Vote of Thanks: Bongumenzi Zungu Trophy for Excellence in Public Speaking: Ben Oellermann The Speakers’ Circle hosted the Grade 10 parents as we bade farewell to the Grade 10 members of the Society. It was a pleasure working with such confident and capable young men who set an excellent example for each Society. Our caterers Empact and Ms Karen Seals astounded us with the most delicious food and décor at each event. Thanks go to Mrs Sharon Mohan for the refreshments and bar service. I am also extremely grateful to the staff members who attend our dinners and act as adjudicators. The members and I value your encouragement and support. Each speaker in these Societies holds a special place in my heart – for his dedication, enthusiasm, determination, motivation and bravery. I am extremely proud to be associated with these prestigious Societies and it makes my heart soar whenever a speaker approaches the lectern, so that I can witness how the topic has been interpreted and the mature insight offered. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable and for being able to reflect on these trying times with rawness and, most importantly, positivity.
