Interwoven-Intertwined was the theme for the Matric practical por tfolio and exam drawing this year. A broad star ting point that led them all down varied conceptual paths. Each matric unpacked their individual slant on the theme in a way that revealed their creative and personal interests. Some standout works were completed by Lonwabo Hlophe,Troy Dyer, and Cole Rencken. These young ar tists interrogated meaningful subjects that revealed mature skills in relevant, personal pieces. 2 3 TERM 4 | NOVEMBER 2022 Matric Art Above: Cole Rencken Above: Lonwabo Hlophe College News Mathematics Teacher Development Continuous staff development and training is an essential par t of Kearsney’s Maths and Science Excellence Programme. Mathematics teachers Mr Brad Savage-Reid and Mr Pierre Le Roux recently completed the seven-week South African Mathematics Foundation Teacher Problem-Solving Course.They both achieved over 90% for this challenging course, placing them in the top 1% of all those who took the course. Mr Pierre Le Roux and Mr Brad Savage-Reid Computer Programming Olympiad Nineteen Kearsney boys took par t in the first round of the IITPSA Computer Programming Olympiad. Gabriel Delpor t (Grade 11) and Benjamin Hancock (Grade 8) made it to the second round.This is a fantastic achievement! Although the boys did not make it through to the final round, they gained valuable lessons from the experience. A special assembly was held on the morning of 12 October for the boys of the College to pay tribute to Headmaster, Mr Elwyn van den Aardweg, who retires at the end of the year after 22 years at the helm. Rev. Kym Bishop opened with devotions and Senior Deputy Mr Peter Kirsten delivered a speech acknowledging the Head’s outstanding contribution to and impact on the College. Headboy Jason Brien spoke with great sincerity on behalf of the boys, including messages from boys in each Grade. The final speech was made by the Head, with a moving and meaningful address aimed at all the boys of the College. A por trait of the Head was unveiled at the end of the assembly.This will be framed and hung in the Henderson Hall, alongside the previous six Kearsney Headmasters. On leaving the Hall each boy and staff member collected a stone to add to the Kearsney cairn. After the cairn ceremony, each boy of the College shook hands with the Headmaster. acknowledging his enormous influence and wishing him well in his retirement. Headmaster’s Farewell to the College The annual prize-giving and Speech Day was held on 30 September, where achievements of the Class of 2022 were recognised and honoured. Kearsney College’s Class of 2022 has maintained the school’s exceptional academic standards, with 31 percent of the Class achieving an aggregate of over 75 percent this year. John Eastes received the coveted Dux award at our annual Speech Day. John received Academic Honours Cum Laude (an average of over 86%) and subject prizes for English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting and Information Technology. He was also awarded the coveted trophy for the best all-rounder in the 6th Form. He served as deputy head prefect, played 1st team golf and soccer, recorded excellent public speaking and debating achievements, and completed the international President’s Award. His runner-up, Javhar Naidoo, also received Academic Honours Cum Laude and subject prizes for History and Life Orientation (shared) and prizes for English essay and History essay (shared). Eight matrics achieved Academic Honours Cum Laude (over 86% ave.). In addition to John Eastes and Javhar Naidoo, Fynn Pollock, Owen Payne, Benjamin Bur ton, Matthew Smith, Andrew Roden and Kayden Robinson achieved this distinction. Academic Honours (80-85%) were awarded to 17 boys. Kearsney Old Boy Dr Jeremy Nel was the guest speaker at the Speech Day and gave the boys an inspiring, positive and enter taining message. He matriculated from Kearsney in 1999, where he was an outstanding academic, debater and musician, before specialising in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He is a member of South Africa’s Ministerial Advisory Council on COVID-19.
