123 Centenary Edition Under 14B Cricket Regular players: Matthew Blair, Reece Clark, Benjamin de Bruyne, Matthew Gouws, Oliver Gray (Captain), Joshua Griffiths, Rowan Grobler, Seth Millican, Simanye Mlakalaka, Riley Nadauld, Ezile Nodada, Daniel Peatt, Thomas Sparks, Jude Wilcox A season consisting of four consecutive losses and only a single victory fails to encapsulate what was otherwise a highly enjoyable term of cricket for the Kearsney U14B team. For many of the players, the success of the season consisted of simply returning to competitive cricket, but the fixtures themselves were often tightly contested dramas- win or lose, there were no dull matches. Although the team suffered heavy defeats, tightly fought contests with Glenwood High School and Maritzburg College kept hope alive among a diverse group of passionate cricketers. The final fixture of the year, against Westville Boys’ High School, was undoubtedly the highlight of the season. After putting up a respectable T20 total of 152/3, which included a free-hitting innings from Matthew Gouws of 70 not out off only 47 deliveries, the boys found themselves in trouble with the Westville batsman finding the required run rate well within their grasp after 10 overs. Reece Clark’s strong arm from the boundary, however, effected two quick run outs within the space of two overs and turned the game on its head. Captain Oliver Gray’s accurate bowling spell ratcheted up the pressure, ensuring a batting collapse that gave Kearsney their first win of the year. The boys’ willingness to keep their heads up until the last 45 minutes of the season is a testament to the positive spirit with which they played the game, as well as the teamwork and camaraderie that never allowed spirits to dip.
