161 160 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition 5th XI Soccer Players: Connor McKenzie, Simon Kemp, Avuzwa Gazi, Josh Alcock, Gary Wood, Kabo Madi, Giovan Linton, Adam Williams, Callum McKeown, Tanna Pullock, Lwandile Bhengu, Kyle McGladdery, Kade Muller, Dylan Dewitt, Cameron Roache The players were keen for the start of the season, considering they had waited so long for the Covid pandemic to relent. These players settled in very quickly to the system we were going to adopt for the season, and their team work and spirit were awesome. We started the season off against a very tough Westville side, winning comfortably 4-1. The following week we played the same opposition as a “filler match” and beat them 4-0. The players were now very confident and in our last game against Northwood, we probably expected the result to fall in our favour, only to lose 2-4 to a well-structured opposition. Overall, a very short but enjoyable season and thanks to the players who were a great bunch of guys. Congratulations. However, what we lacked in physicality and maturity, we made up for in attitude. With only playing half a season and some fixture cancellations, it was hard to gain momentum and the team suffered losses as a result. Over the course of the season we maintained our consistent work rate and motivation and finished with a win. As a coach, it was a privilege to work with such enthusiastic, eager, and hard-working young men, who never once turned down a challenge from any opposition. The future of these boys is bright, as the attitude they show on the sports field will radiate into other aspects of their young adult lives. Results: Played 4, Won 1, Lost 3 Mr Jordan du Preez Coach 7th XI Soccer Players: Adam Stonier, Adam Gibson, James Riceman, Matthew Schramm, Lex Rencken, Daniel Akal, Rourke Paterson, Bevan Crookes, Joshua van der Merwe, Nic van Heerden, Jens Otto, Ethan Barrett, Seth Vallance, Connor Soulsby Our 7th team played very well, and some players were outstanding. Jens Otto and Connor Soulsby held the mid-field positions like professionals, with excellent communication, and they dictated the tempo of games. The team always showed great effort during practices, which helped the level of play in games. Our captain and striker, Adam Stonier, showed superb skills, and his attacking ability was off the charts. Defensively, Nathan Barrett was great for us in every game, making strong tackles and delivering free kicks that put fear into goalkeepers’ hearts. Thanks for a wonderful season. Mr Mfanafuthi Ntombela Coach U16A Soccer An extended inter-house soccer tournament was the perfect warm-up to what would likely have been a truly memorable 2021 season. Although only three fixtures were played, the boys maintained an unbeaten record against Durban High School, Westville Boys’ High School and Hilton College. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the away victory over Westville, with the 3-2 score line not reflecting Kearsney’ dominant performance. The attacking prowess and flair of Asande Nyawose and captain James Gillespie kept the opponent’s defences under unrelenting pressure, while Hayden Bishop’s incredible work rate, and reliability at the back, provided a solid foundation for the entire team. It is a great pity that the season was cut short by the pandemic, but the boys can be confident of achieving much success in the years to come as they enter the open age group. I enjoyed coaching this team and I commend them for their enthusiasm and commitment at practices, which made being involved with them a pleasure. This group possessed a strong work ethic, winning mentality, and a desire to achieve high standards for the team. Dube led the team also to an unbeaten season. A big thank you to our captains, Boipelo Dube and Joshua Soanes, and the team manager, Bulelani Nodada, for their fighting spirit, passionate team talks and their combined leadership. To all the boys who represented this team, thank you, and remember how sacred Kearsney College soccer is - the fields, the jerseys, and the atmosphere. Never stop playing the beautiful game and may you strive to be the best you can. On and off the field. Results: Played 5, Won 5 Mr Andile Ntshingila Coach
