163 162 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition Under 16B Soccer Players: Anesu Chimusoro (Vice-captain), Hayden Davel, Sean Diseko (Captain), James Drysdale, Nala Madlala, Connor Mills, Solwazi Ngwane, Otsile Ntsele, Callan Osborne, Brett Parkinson (Goalkeeper), Ross Phillips, Kyle Pottinger, Fritz Rheeder (Goalkeeper), Thando Sithole, StJohn Vallance, Nhlendla Zulu Most of the COVID-affected season was spent playing internal matches, however, we managed to fit in two matches against other schools before the season was brought to a sudden stop. Internal matches were used to filter the players into various teams and these matches tended to be extremely tight as players gave of their best. The two inter-school fixtures were against Hilton College and Westville Boys’ High School. The Westville match was played under horrific weather conditions and both sides did well to play some constructive football. The side against Hilton was quite changed as the U16 age group had several players missing. The boys played with determination but succumbed to intense pressure. Kearsney conceded a goal with time running out. The players gave a good account of themselves, both on and off the field. I would like to thank the team for their enthusiastic approach to training and matches. During this season we unfortunately only played two matches against other schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our first game was against Westville Boys’ Under 16C team, and the second game was against Reddam House Umhlanga’s Under 16A team, where the boys represented Kearsney with passion and pride. The game against Westville was played in cold and wet conditions, but the boys showed real Kearsney grit and clinched a 1-0 victory. We scored within the first two minutes of the game and fought hard to deny them scoring opportunities. Jarred Savic had an outstanding game in the goals, which proved to be the difference on the day. Although we did not play much soccer against other schools the boys attended practices regularly and enjoyed the internal games we played during the week. This team’s positive attitude, passion for the game and their natural talent made my job as a coach an absolute pleasure. I would like to congratulate Kamva Khamba (Captain) for leading the team. After two internal matches due to inter-school sport being suspended due to COVID, the team spirit was good, but waning. With the resumption of inter-school matches, spirits rose and the team faced Westville Boys’ High in a home and away fixture. Despite their best efforts, both matches were lost. The overall atmosphere in the team was one of thorough enjoyment and the simple joy of running around outside, having fun. Everyone gave of their best, playing for the good of the team. Thank you to all involved for a very enjoyable season. It was unfortunate that they did not play any fixtures against other schools during the season, due to lack of depth at other schools, and cancellation of fixtures due to COVID-19. The boys, however, remained committed to the sport that they love so much. They continued to impress on and off the field and they also helped other teams, playing for them when required. The U16E only played 3 internal games.
