However, being “starved” of opportunities to earn bragging rights in 2020, Gillingham boys got stuck into every possible occasion to achieve the major House goal; to be crowned the Top House. Gillingham’s swimming team kicked the year off in spectacular fashion! The team took top honours at the inter-house gala, even though some boys had to be pulled away from their prep time to fill in for injured teammates. Due to COVID restrictions on interschool sport, some codes required a change in format, which meant that, instead of a one-week affair, boys had to compete over up to six weeks. The new formats of these events saw the House captains being fully involved for more extended periods. Nine inter-house sports events took place in 2021, with Gillingham victorious in the swimming gala, water polo, athletics, hockey, and soccer events. These results, combined with a second place in the cricket and cross-country events, ensured Gillingham was crowned the sporting champions for 2021, winning the prestigious A H Smith Inter-house Trophy. Contending for the Inter-house Cultural Trophy is always a tall order for any House. However, witnessing the camaraderie and teamwork between Grade 12 and 11 boys in the build-up to and during the Inter-house Drama event, it was clear that Gillingham boys were putting in a concerted effort. The hours invested in their preparation paid off as Gillingham was crowned the winner of this event. The Public Speaking event was highly entertaining and brought the best out of all participants. Gillingham ended 2nd overall in a tightly fought battle. Sadly, the Music event was cancelled midway through preparations, but Gillingham had done enough to secure a victory in the cultural competition. Our bid for the Parkes Inter-house trophy for Academics saw us gaining ground on Pembroke, the early leaders. By the end of Term 1 the scores were level. Credit should be given where due, and we congratulate Pembroke for winning this esteemed trophy, leaving Gillingham to claim a second place. Academically, Gillingham boys achieved tremendous results. Members of our Matric group were awarded five subject prizes, two boys achieved Academic Colours, four achieved Academic Honours and four boys achieved Academic Honours Cum Laude. Congratulations to you all. Thank you for your contributions and for being positive role models to the rest of the boys - juniors and seniors alike. Winning two of the three pillars in the inter-house competition was enough for Gillingham to be crowned the Top House of 2021 and, therefore, awarded the Veldman Top House Trophy. To all Gillingham boys, your efforts and demeanour in the House and contributions to its success are greatly appreciated. You have ensured that Gillingham is truly an efficient and happy team. As we wish the Class of 2021 all the best for the future, I would like to quote… “I’ll tell you what is going to come out of this… A generation of youngsters that will realise, appreciate and respect the magic and possibility in every opportunity. Because we have missed so many. A generation that, when opportunities come again, will decide “What the hell” and seize them. We will seize them because we are Kearsney boys. We are South Africans. Boys who have stomped up and down over hot coals for the last 18 months, not getting the reprieve promised at the outset. So, when we do rise from the ashes, we will rise as the whole damn fire.” John Eastes, Grade 11 May 2022 be full of opportunities to succeed and exceed expectations beyond your wildest dreams. Carpe Diem. Mr Antonie Prinsloo
