Chronicle-2021

47 Centenary Edition Gillingham House Head of House report From Grade 8, the Class of 2021 and I knew that our Matric year was bound to be unique and memorable as we were blessed to be the class that leads the school into the next 100 years of Kearsney College. We knew that it was not going to be the type of year we had all hoped and dreamt of for the previous 5 years; however, the prefects and I were determined to make the most of the time and opportunities we had to re-establish Gillingham House as not only the top House, but also the House of choice. As prefects, we challenged the House to become the image of a true Kearsney boy. By focusing on discipline, pride, respect, honesty and being a well-rounded young man. However, our primary goal was to create a brotherhood that stretches from the Grade 8 boys to the Matrics. On reflection on the challenges, I can proudly say we managed to achieve our goals. I am incredibly proud to see individuals and grades become what we had hoped for. 2020/21 has been remembered for breaking stereotypes and challenging the “norm”. As a House, we were honoured to be a part of the many breakthroughs, including having Ms Arndt become a Housemistress. Having her involved taught the boys many lessons about manners, respect and maturity. This helped the prefects to be able to tick off some goals we had set. We are incredibly thankful for her willingness to join our House, and I wish her nothing but the best in this House in the years to come. With COVID-19 still playing its part in 2021, we faced many challenges regarding inter-house events. Although the challenges were present as each inter-house event arrived, the boys who took charge of the activities were ready to win no matter the issues faced. With their hard work, communication, passion and motivation, we were able to win the sports, cultural and the Top House award. I commend the boys concerned for their contributions to the success of the House and the re-establishment of Gillingham’s continued greatness. Instilling the idea of brotherhood in the House was very important to me, as I believed there were only advantages to its prioritisation. It played a crucial role in the success of the House and amongst the boys, as the boys in lower grades were comfortable, whether it was in the House or in communication with a senior. This motivated boys to work for the House, not because they were forced to, but by their own choosing. To have been a part of this school and Head of my House has been one of the greatest joys and blessings to have been given. I thank everyone who supported me through it all. Let this not be a farewell from the Class of 2021, but a “see you soon”. Menzi Mhlungu
