For the first time in the history of the College, an academic year began with welcoming the new intake of Grade 8 boys without them being on campus. This roller coaster of a year saw boys going through a range of emotions as they tried to deal with a raging global pandemic and local unrest. The excitement of starting a new chapter in their young lives was countered by online lessons at a new school, no team sport, different mealtimes for the different grades and adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols. This group of Grade 8 boys will be remembered for their ability to adapt and deal with disappointment. They missed out on so much of what the school has to offer, yet they did their best to familiarise themselves with and follow the school’s many traditions. They endeavoured to uphold the academic standards and take part in the limited extracurricular activities on offer. One of the highlights of 2021 must be the Leadership Week camp. Despite the heavy rains and leaking tents, this group of boys showed tremendous spirit and camaraderie. The few House braais that we could have also stood out as highlights in the year. Not too many things in life can compare with a wellcooked boerewors whilst enjoying the beautiful views of the Valley of a 1000 Hills and chatting around a bonfire. The group has tremendous potential. Many boys have seized all the opportunities that came their way and performed at the school level, provincially and nationally. With keen interest we will follow their development as they move through the grades at the College. I would like to thank and congratulate the Head of House Kwazi Moyo and the Haley House prefects for leading the House with distinction during these challenging times. A particular word of thanks must also go to the duty staff, the cleaners, the San Sisters and the school counsellors for supporting the boys during the year. My final message to the Grade 8 boys of 2021 is to always remember this: “Tough times don’t last, but tough resilient people do”. Mr Mouton Badenhorst Housemaster, Mr Mouton Badenhorst with two Haley prefects, Jens Otto and Head of House, Kwazi Moyo
